India stands on the threshold of profound change. The country is accelerating toward global prominence, driven by innovation, startups, and expanding industries that signal an economic awakening. Yet amid this momentum, Bihar’s 13 crore people, rich in resilience, history, and cultural legacy, remain largely excluded from this story of progress. The numbers tell a sobering story. Bihar consistently ranks near the bottom on key socio economic measures. Its per capita income stands at just ₹50,555, far below the national average of ₹1,50,007 for the year 2022 to 23. While the state is home to over 10 percent of India’s population, it contributes less than 3 percent to the national GDP. Public health indicators are equally alarming. The infant mortality rate stands at 52 per 1,000 live births, exceeding the national figure of 50, and more than 80 percent of children under five are malnourished. Educational outcomes remain deeply uneven, with Bihar among the lowest in literacy rates. More than 64 percent of married women are unable to read or write, severely restricting their access to vital health and social information. The entrepreneurial ecosystem reflects this stagnation. Startups remain scarce, with only 0.75 percent of India’s recognised startups based in Bihar.
How long can such imbalance persist? How long can a land that once illuminated the world with centres of learning like Nalanda and thinkers like Chanakya remain confined by underdevelopment?
